My Locks        Archive: A-L        Archive: M-Z        About         Contact

As a passionate collector of puzzle padlocks, I created this site to showcase the diverse designs and types found around the world. Under the Archives section, you’ll find an encyclopedic list of puzzle padlocks from various countries, though many are still waiting to be discovered and added. A puzzle lock, or puzzle padlock, incorporates a puzzle or challenge into its unlocking mechanism. In my collection below, you will also find Trick locks, used by magicians, mentalists, and escapologists, which rely solely on a single trick or step to open the shackle. By contrast, puzzle locks typically require two or more steps to solve. Displayed here is my collection of puzzle padlocks, each with a unique solution and accompanied with my personal difficulty rating.

1 = Easy    2 = Tricky    3 = Challenging    4 = Gruelling    5 = Hardest

2 Key Old Brass Iron Trick Padlock

2 Key Old Brass Iron Padlock

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: India
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 6.8 x 8.8 x 2.5cm

This antique brass and iron padlock, featuring a screw mechanism, was crafted in India and is a rare find. While it presents little challenge if both keys are available, the real puzzle lies in understanding its internal workings. Though relegated to my antiquities section, it remains a fascinating historical piece to showcase to curious enthusiasts.

3 Three Keyhole Puzzle Padlockk

3 Keyhole Puzzle Padlock

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: Thought to be German
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 6.5 x 10 x 2cm

A distinctive iron padlock, estimated to be 60–70 years old, likely originates from Germany. Weighing approximately 151g, it features an ornate design and presents three keyholes—two intentionally blocked to prevent key insertion while the supplied key fails to operate in the only accessible opening. The padlocks simple mechanism is more a deterrent/trick lock than a true puzzle lock.

3 Monkeys padlock

3 Monkeys Heart Puzzle Lock

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: India
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 11 x 17 x 4cm

The 3 Monkey Heart Puzzle Lock is the largest and heaviest lock in my collection, yet is one of the simplest to open. Despite its hefty 1.2kg weight, the essence of its complexity lies in its deceptive ease of opening, provided you grasp the unconventional method. Like a magic trick, once you know the secret, it’s rather disappointing. This said the size and weight of the lock divert attention to how to open the lock, making one overlook the obvious.

Ace Of Hearts Lock

Ace of Hearts

Creator or Manufacturer: Professor Puzzle — Houdini Puzzle Lock
Country of Origin: England
Rating: 2/5 (Tricky)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 4.9 x 8.1 x 2.4cm

A few years back, a series of puzzle padlocks, aptly named the Houdini Puzzle Locks (from Professor Puzzle), was released to the market. Crafted with precision and offered at a reasonable price, each puzzle in the collection boasted a distinctive method for unlocking. The lock under scrutiny here is adorned with a solid brass nameplate and presents no conspicuous parts or buttons. Observation is the key with this one.

Ant Hunt

Ant Hunt

Creator or Manufacturer: Boaz Feldman—PuzzLocks
Country of Origin: Israel
Rating: 3/5 (Challenging)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5 x 8 x 1.4cm

Initially released at IPP 41 puzzle exchange, Boaz Feldman later released it to the public where its first run sold out in nearly a day. The Puzzlocks website indicates that one may need to draw inspiration from clever chimpanzees that use tools to tackle intricate ant-hunting challenges in the wild, suggesting that the puzzler will need to channel all their inner 'chimp wisdom' to solve this puzzle and find the ant.

Antique Brass Fish Lock

Antique Brass Fish Padlock

Creator or Manufacturer: Unkown
Country of Origin: China
Rating: 2/5 (Tricky)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 13.5 x 6 x 5.4cm

Many Asian padlocks offer limited deterrence against tampering due to their size. However, this one is a robust, practical padlock, boasting a weight of 440g and a length of 18cm (including shackle), crafted from solid cast brass and available in brassy bronze or antiqued oxidized green colours. For added security, the padlock requires two steps to unlock it. Despite identical keys, the absence of a visible keyhole may initially perplex the puzzler.

Antique Brass Padlock

Antique Brass Padlock

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: India
Rating: 2/5 (Tricky)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5.2 x 6.5 x 1.6cm

An intriguing antique brass lock that immediately caught my interest. Though not overly complex, it requires a touch of lateral thinking to unlock. Weighing 135g, this Indian-made piece features an ornate design that adds to the mystery of its operation. With no buttons, raised rivets, or sliding parts—just the lock and its key—the real challenge lies in figuring out how to use the key when the keyway is blocked by an immovable piece of solid metal.

Antique Brass Padlock

Antique Brass Padlock (Multiple Systems)

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: India
Rating: 3/5 (Challenging)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 4.5 x 7.4 x 3.2cm

As a collector of puzzle locks, I acquire padlocks with distinctively unique opening mechanisms, ranging from simple to intricately complex. This antique padlock from India embodies the uniqueness required for addition to my collection. Appearing standard and robustly manufactured, little does one know it will take the movement of three different parts, plus the key, to open it—great lock and so misleading.

Antique Iron Padlock

Antique Iron Padlock

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: India
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 6.8 x 10.1 x 2cm

An Indian Puzzle lock that diverts attention away from the solution is this Antique Iron Padlock. Despite its weathered 70-year-old appearance, the lock emanates an aura of former protector of cherished valuables, its adornments holding the key to unlocking its shackle. Indian padlocks often incorporate decorative surrounds cleverly concealing components crucial to unlocking the shackle.

Arrow Of Love Heart Puzzle

Arrow of Love Lock, Heart Puzzle

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: China
Rating: 3/5 (Challenging)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5.7 x 7 x 1.2cm

An affordable cast metal padlock puzzle from China, this intricately designed lock resembles the pricier Lunatic Lock, both having similar solutions to unlock them. The primary objective is to disengage the shackle from the body, with much of the solving process relying on tactile perception and observation. There is no key provided, nor any keyhole. When solved, one is still unsure of the internal mechanism that makes this work.

B.Lock padlock

B.Lock

Creator or Manufacturer: Boaz Feldman — Puzzlocks
Country of Origin: Israel
Rating: 3/5 (Challenging)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 4 x 6.3 x 1.4cm

Boaz Feldman, an artist in the Puzzle Lock realm, takes this art form to new heights, crafting distinctive locks—each a masterpiece in its own right. Made from authentic Israeli padlocks and precision-machined, his creations showcase a blend of craftsmanship and innovation. My first Puzzlock was the B.Lock, and it left me thoroughly impressed. The lock’s quality and solution exceeded my expectations. Unassuming, this lock harbours a small secret.

B.Lock II

B.Lock II

Creator or Manufacturer: Boaz Feldman — Puzzlocks
Country of Origin: Israel
Rating: 3/5 (Challenging)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 4 x 6.3 x 1.4cm

The Boaz Feldman presents yet another intriguing lock, labelled the B.Lock II, whose name may suggest a connection to the original B.Lock, although, in reality, they share no resemblance apart from their size. Attempting to unlock this mechanism with the key initially proves futile, as the shackle remains steadfast. To successfully open the B.Lock II, a delicate touch and a steady hand are paramount.

Bangalore Puzzle Lock, Mystery of The Golden Key, Trick Lock 3

Bangalore Puzzle Lock, Mystery of The Golden Key, Trick Lock 3

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: India
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5.5 x 9 x 2.8cm

Three names (at least) for the same lock. Made in India, the lock appears similar in appearance to Jean-Claude Constantin's "Swing Trick Lock - Lock 8," although that's as close as any similarities come. This lock is extremely simple for those familiar with puzzle locks but is still enjoyable for newcomers to try and solve. Made of iron and bronze, this lock is a replica of an ancient Indian piece made to appear old but is brand new.

Brass Puzzle Lock 6 Key

Brass Puzzle Padlock (6 Keys - 2 x 3 Keys)

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: India
Rating: 3/5 (Challenging)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5.5 x 13 x 4.5cm

Another substantial padlock from India is the Brass Puzzle Padlock with six keys—(2 sets of 3). Manufactured from solid brass, the lock poses a formidable challenge even without the accompanying keys. Examination reveals an absence of any keyholes, yet supplied are three unique keys. At the bottom, a nut-like shape is similar to a key provided, however, attempting to use it proves futile, as it is too small to fit the bolt. How does one open the lock?

Broken Heart Lock Puzzle

Broken Heart Lock Puzzle

Creator or Manufacturer: Jean-Claude Constantin
Country of Origin: Germany
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 6.4 x 1.3 x 1.7cm

While not challenging, the Broken Heart puzzle lock is an ideal entry point for newcomers to the hobby. Made from brass, the unlocking mechanism demands little thought, making it less daunting than other puzzle locks. In a somewhat amusing twist, I unlocked it effortlessly simply inserting and misaligning the key. While it undoubtedly adds aesthetic appeal to a display cabinet, its ranking among puzzle locks remains modest.

Asian Combination Lock

Chinese Vintage Bronze Keyed Combination Lock

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: China
Rating: 5/5 (Hardest)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 4.8 x 2.6 x 1.2cm

Chinese padlocks typically come in two designs: the split pin or the letter/character combination lock. The latter operates without a key, instead relying on a specific combination. While deceptively compact, the combination lock presents a formidable challenge since its mechanism involves a combination of five wheels, each adorned with four characters, the random probability of cracking the code being 1 in 1024.

Classic IQ Metal Brain Teaser

Classic IQ Metal Brain Teaser

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: China
Rating: 5/5 (Hardest)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 8.5 x 3.6 x 2.3 cm

The fundamental concept underlying this puzzle mirrors the Chinese Vintage Bronze Keyed Combination Lock, albeit with a design that amplifies the challenge due to an absence of characters. Precision in orienting and positioning the knobs is imperative, as failure to do so results in being effectively locked out. Although susceptible to substantial force, this puzzle lock provides an enjoyable challenge.

Combo Breaker - Locksmith Series Puzzle Locks

Combo Breaker - Locksmith Series Puzzle Locks

Creator or Manufacturer: Jared Petersen — CoreMods
Country of Origin: America
Rating: 4/5 (Gruelling)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 9 x 10 x 5cm

Designed by Jared Petersen and printed by CoreMods, this was introduced in the Advent Calendar 2022 holiday season as part of a Locksmith series that have intricate secret mechanisms. Different in shape and design to other puzzle locks, this one stands out with its dark green colouring, silver shackle and dial. Another variation having a bronze finish instead of the silver which is purely for aesthetics.

Cryptex

Cryptex (Metal, 6 Tumblers)

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: China
Rating: 5/5 (Hardest)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 13.7 x 5.2 x 5.2cm

In Dan Brown’s novel and film ‘The Da Vinci Code,’ a Cryptex was described as an aid for sending secret messages written on papyrus and safeguarded by a fragile glass ampoule containing vinegar. Any attempts to force open the Cryptex shattered the vial freeing the acid to dissolve the hidden message. Made up of 6 wheels, each adorned with 26 letters, the challenge is to find the right combination at odds of a staggering 309 million to 1 against.

Compass Cryptex USB Flash Drive

Cryptex Compass USB Flash Drive

Creator or Manufacturer: Steampunk Junkies
Country of Origin: America
Rating: 4/5 (Gruelling)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5.6 x 6.5 x 1.2cm

A blend of puzzles crafted into an old-fashioned Steampunk-style cryptex compass containing a USB Flash Drive. Four corner wheels control its opening via compass markings, but the internal mechanism more closely resembles the Classic IQ Metal Brain Teaser than a typical cryptex. Despite this, it can be opened without referring to the instructions, utilizing the same technique used to pick Chinese combination locks.

DanLock

DanLock

Creator or Manufacturer: Dan / Boaz Feldman — Puzzlocks
Country of Origin: Israel
Rating: 4/5 (Gruelling)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5 x 8.2 x 1.4cm

My second Feldman puzzle lock was Dan Feldman's iconic DanLock, hailed as the Rolls Royce of Puzzle Locks. This later version is the B type DanLock made by Dan's son Boaz. This lock employs a unique twist using a half key to lock and unlock the padlock. The aim is to open the shackle and remove a key attached to the said shackle. The initial position though raises eyebrows since a cut-in-half key prompts the challenges of retrieving it if inserted...

Creator or Manufacturer: Dan Feldman (re-engineered by Boaz Feldman, Puzzlocks)
Country of Origin: Israel
Rating: 4/5 (Gruelling)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5 x 8.2 x 1.4cm

Several DanLock-A’s were recently discovered amongst inventor Dan Feldman's belongings. His son, Boaz, took it upon himself to restore a few of the rare locks and offer them to a number of people, re-categorised as ‘Collector Editions’. Since Dan Feldman created this, and with a rare opportunity to obtain one, I had to purchase it. With some elements re-engineered by Boaz, this lock holds special place in my collection and is a lovely addition.

dead lock

Dead Lock!

Creator or Manufacturer: Professor Puzzle — Houdini Puzzle Lock
Country of Origin: England
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5 x 8.9 x 2.5cm

Unveiled in 2013 by the UK-based Professor Puzzle, ‘Dead Lock’ emerged as part of a series of ingenious trick padlocks saturating the market briefly. Despite exceptional craftsmanship, the locks relatively high price here in New Zealand proved a significant deterrent, dissuading many potential buyers from acquiring them. While straightforward to solve, it is an excellent introduction to puzzle locks since other similar locks use the same solution.

Decorative Jewellery Box Lock

Decorative Jewellery Box Lock

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: China
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 3.5 x 1.7 x 1cm

The ornate jewellery box lock is often found securing camphor chests and is one of the smallest in my collection. It represents a simple type yet remains a deterrent, effectively slowing down any attempts to access items safeguarded by the lock. A specialized key is required to enter the H-shaped keyhole, and once aligned, a gentle push sees the key engage with a barbed spring attached to the shackle, allowing it to break free from the case.

Dial It In Lock (3D Printed, Purple & Gold)

Creator or Manufacturer: Jared Petersen — CoreMods
Country of Origin: America
Rating: 3/5 (Challenging)

Released by Jared Petersen of CoreMods as part of the 2022 Advent Calendar series, this puzzle belongs to the Locksmith collection—3D-printed locks that feature a variety of concealed mechanisms. Like its sibling, the Combo Breaker, it comes in two colour variants; the differences being purely aesthetic. One features a purple body with gold detailing, while the other comes in purple with a silver shackle and dial. Extremely clever and most satisfying.

Easy Peasy Lock

Easy Peasy Puzzle

Creator or Manufacturer: Sashko Peshevski
Country of Origin: Sweden
Rating: 3/5 (Challenging)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5.3 x 7.8 x 1.6cm

An intricately designed mid-sized padlock, proudly named “Easy Peasy,” is accompanied by a sleek plastic stand. Despite its seemingly straightforward appearance, unlocking this requires more than conventional methods. The lone key effortlessly turns within the lock but disappointingly fails to release the shackle. Cryptically, the only clue to unravelling the mystery “demands a departure from the norm.”

Einstein’s Freedom Lock Puzzle

Einstein’s Freedom Lock Puzzle

Creator or Manufacturer: Professor Puzzle — The Einstein Collection
Country of Origin: England
Rating: 2/5 (Tricky)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 7 x 10 x 1.5cm

This alternative type of puzzle lock employs a maze of interlocking wooden pieces, the five irregularly shaped parts’ precise alignment determining the shackle’s release. Instead of a key opening a mechanical lock, it requires moving wooden pieces around a confined area. While not always a preferred style of puzzle lock, the challenge is still undeniably thought-provoking.

Five Pointed Star padlock

Five-Pointed Star Trick Puzzle

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: China
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5.9 x 6.2 x 1.9cm

Cast padlocks, originating mainly from China, have a different quality regarding their solutions, the Five-Pointed Star Lock a case in point. This lock has an unconventional method to free the shackle, and my feelings on it are not overly satisfying. It was cheap, so perhaps little can be expected. Interesting, but not a favourite.

Free The Key

Free The Key (Keymaze) – Metal

Creator or Manufacturer: Oskar van Deventer — Puzzle Master
Country of Origin: Netherlands / United States of America
Rating: 3/5 (Challenging)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 11 x 5 x 5cm

Deceptively intricate, this mechanical puzzle lock earns its place for its nuanced complexity. Designed by Oskar van Deventer, the puzzle is available in metal and wood. The goal is to detach the circular ring/wheel from the key before returning it back to the initial starting point. The puzzle is a three-dimensional maze, and in an excellent article written for Mathematica® Journal, Kenneth E. Caviness explores using mathematics to solve it.

Free The Key Wood

Free The Key (Keymaze) – Wood

Creator or Manufacturer: Oskar van Deventer
Country of Origin: Netherlands / China
Rating: 3/5 (Challenging)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 11 x 5 x 5cm

This mechanical puzzle lock also earns equal placing for its nuanced complexity, for it is the same Free the Key puzzle but made out of wood. The primary goal is to detach the circular ring/wheel from the key before reattaching it and ending up at the key handle–the initial starting point. The puzzle is two mazes separated at the midpoint by the key’s teeth, an interesting concept not readily apparent to those trying to solve it.

Funlock

Funlock

Creator or Manufacturer: Boaz Feldman — Puzzlocks
Country of Origin: Israel
Rating: 2/5 (Tricky)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5 x 8.2 x 1.8cm

Considered an entry-point puzzle, the Funlock is an enjoyable puzzle-solving experience that presents a challenge for those new to the genre. The first task is to liberate the key secured by a black cable tie, then use the freed key to unlock the padlock. Freeing the key can pose more of a challenge than solving how to open the shackle. Once free, the key fails to initiate the unlocking mechanism. How does one open the lock?

God Lock

God Lock, The

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: China
Rating: 2/5 (Tricky)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 4.5 x 6.2 x 1.4cm

An exquisite padlock accentuated with an aged antique appearance. The objective is to unlock the padlock, which presents a challenge for a central post that obstructs the key’s access. The solution is rather clever for such a low-cost but well-made item. A friend who purchased one requested assistance with its solution. Here, I discovered the shackle can open in the opposite direction, indicating two different lock variants.

Gravity Lock

HoKey CoKey Puzzle Lock

Creator or Manufacturer: Ali Morris and Steve Nicholls — Two Brass Monkeys
Country of Origin: England
Rating: 3/5 (Challenging)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 4 x 9 x 0.9cm

This puzzle is one of those gems you want to show the solution to due to its clever ingenuity. At first glance, the padlock appears ordinary, devoid of moving parts or hidden buttons. Surprisingly, the provided keys, each distinct from the other, prove ineffective in unlocking the mechanism, as is the bottle opener. With few options remaining, this one is a real baffler and has left many giving up before finding the solution. Beautifully made.

HoKey PoKey

HoKey PoKey Puzzle Lock

Country of Origin: England
Rating: 2/5 (Tricky)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 3.9 x 9 x 0.9cm

After the HoKey CoKey puzzles release at the 38th International Puzzle Party, Two Brass Monkeys received feedback—mainly from American customers—that the correct name for the song is actually the ‘HoKey PoKey,’ while wine enthusiasts remarked the bottle opener had limited functionality. With both pieces of feedback, Two Brass Monkeys created a new puzzle with the ‘correct’ name and added a wine stopper—the ‘40’ on the keyring a tribute to the 40th IPP where it was first released.

Creator or Manufacturer: Jim-Hoo Ahn — Hanayama
Country of Origin: Japan
Rating: 5/5 (Hardest)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 3.3 x 4.3 x 2.3cm

While not a typical padlock, it is renowned for its formidable complexity and is one of the more challenging. Despite a month of trying to solve it, I eventually sought online solutions, many proving convoluted, prompting me to create my own from bits of each video. The objective is to disassemble and reassemble the padlock into four distinct pieces, navigating the multidimensional component movements, up, down, left, and right, akin to a Rubik Cube.

Iron Trick Puzzle Padlock

Iron Trick Puzzle Padlock

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: India
Rating: 2/5 (Tricky)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 7.8 x 9.6 x 2.8cm

Expertly hand-forged by a skilled locksmith, this antique piece, aged around 70-80 years, may impart a touch of rust and grime during use, yet the method for opening is a compelling reward that outweighs the inconvenience of aged metal residue on your hands. With only a single key featuring an internal thread, the lock presents no obvious entry point for the key, a common theme for a puzzle padlock. Some concealed secrets well-hidden.

Three versions of this puzzle exist, with this one likely the easiest thanks to its transparent acrylic body that reveals the internal workings. It is a well-crafted puzzle offering a relaxing, enjoyable challenge—an ideal way to spend a few minutes freeing the shackle. Other versions, made from wood or brass, provide a different aesthetic. While not particularly difficult, it is visually striking and makes an excellent display piece.

Dimensions (W x H x D): 4.8 x 7.9 x 2.6cm

The Houdini Padlock Puzzle series manufacturer often incorporated brass faceplates into their designs that covered another hidden keyhole or part of the lock solution. Although this puzzle also displays a brass faceplate, it does not hide a second keyhole. Instead, it introduces a more inventive approach using a two-step process to free the shackle.

Loco Lock

Loco

Creator or Manufacturer: Boaz Feldman — Puzzlocks
Country of Origin: Israel
Rating: 4/5 (Gruelling)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5 x 8 x 1.2cm

Boaz Feldman’s Exchange puzzle, featured at IPP40 in Jerusalem, presents a formidable challenge to enthusiasts. Characterized by its scarcity of clues, Boaz himself describes it as a “bit of a blind solve.” The mechanism, a 2-step puzzle, is unique and intriguing, enhancing the puzzle’s complexity. Production hurdles have limited its availability to just a small batch making the lock shown somewhat collectible.

Loki

Loki

Creator or Manufacturer: Boaz Feldman — Puzzlocks
Country of Origin: Israel
Rating: 5/5 (Hardest)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 4.8 x 8 x 1cm

At the time of writing, this lock completes my collection of every Boaz Feldman puzzle padlock. A sequential discovery type, the lock is aptly named after a northern god renowned for mischief, mayhem, disorder, and cunning. The lock's name is fitting, as it is a beast to solve, much harder for me than the infamous DanLock. It's no wonder I saved this one for last since the large lock is packed with numerous tricks and traps.

Loophole

Loophole

Creator or Manufacturer: Boaz Feldman — Puzzlocks
Country of Origin: Israel
Rating: 3/5 (Challenging)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 4.8 x 8.2 x 1.2cm

An interesting padlock that has that extra something to get the mental juices flowing. An ordinary padlock with the exception of two holes drilled through it. One through an 'o' in the word Loophole and the other on the locks left side. Removing the key from its tie, it does not open it nor turn. The objective: to free the shackle and open the lock.

Luck Fish 1 Lock

Luck Fish Lock#1, Vintage Chinese Style

Creator or Manufacturer: Unkown
Country of Origin: China
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 11.8 x 5.8 x 2.5cm

A familiar method to lock Asian padlocks is a barbed spring attached to the shackle. The Chinese split-spring lock has many features: the key must have the right-shaped key head to enter the specifically shaped keyhole and shaped correctly to squeeze the split spring to release the shackle from the case. Interestingly, the key is not required to refasten the lock. Not a true ‘puzzle lock’ per se but attractive and unique.

Luck Fish 2

Luck Fish Lock #2, Vintage Chinese Style

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: China
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 6 x 3.1 x 0.9cm

Like the Luck Fish Lock #1, only smaller, this version also uses a barbed spring attached to the shackle to lock it. The Chinese split spring padlock has many features: the key must have the right-shaped key head to enter the specifically shaped keyhole and squeeze the split spring to release the shackle from the case. The key is made specific to each lock.

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: China
Rating: 4/5 (Gruelling)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 38 x 4.3 x 1.6cm

This handmade 9 Ring Meleda puzzle inherited from my great-grandfather, a carpenter who worked on Central Otago gold field dredges in the late 1890s–was gifted to him by Asian gold prospectors. Originating from China, this puzzle type was invented around 181-234 A.D. Norway much later adapted them for use as an effective luggage lock and its reason for inclusion here. The objective is to liberate a long loop between the nails and rings.

Mind The Gap

Mind The Gap

Creator or Manufacturer: Andrew Coles — AC Puzzles
Country of Origin: England
Rating: 4/5 (Gruelling)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 8 x 5 x 2cm

This puzzle is one of those that makes you think outside the box and its solution certainly deviates from convention. An Abus bolt shackle, weighing ~450g, must be opened, but like almost every puzzle lock, the keys insertion at the start does little to help. A nice padlock with what can only called an amazingly clever solve. The first 200 produced have been stamped with a consecutive serial number making #033 a nice collectible on the shelf.

Old Antique Iron Handcrafted Hidden Key Hole

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: India
Rating: 2/5 (Tricky)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 12.8 x 7.1 x 2.6cm

At over 70 years old and made from iron, this lock’s aged appearance is genuine. This lock resembles a large key accompanied by a small key. The handle of the big key cleverly doubles as the shackle, and near the big key’s teeth end, an appropriate-sized keyhole lies, awaiting the little key’s entry. However, this is a deceptive element, for the key turns freely, unhampered by any lock mechanism—the true keyhole hidden elsewhere.

A fascinating lock crafted in India features a keyhole and combination lock – an uncommon pairing in a padlock. This puzzle lock is a sliding puzzle, crafted with a pleasing combination of brass and wood, and features internal metal components manipulated by three outward-facing copper pegs. Although the solution closely mirrors the 'Einstein’s Freedom Lock,'—differing only in two minor steps—and who was first, is a mystery. Despite this, the lock is a well-crafted piece that I’m pleased to have in my collection.

Crafted by the ingenious Jean-Claude Constantin, this lock boasts an original approach to shackle opening. Initial scrutiny reveals no overt irregularities, yet a subtle asymmetry in the rear exit hole is apparent. Concealed by a numbered brass cover, an additional keyhole eludes immediate detection, teasing the solver on possible methods to release the shackle. In the tradition of Indian-made puzzle locks, this one makes one overlook the obvious.

Creator or Manufacturer: Jean-Claude Constantin
Country of Origin: Germany
Rating: 2/5 (Tricky)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 6.3 x 10.4 x 3.5cm

In the realm of lock puzzles, a strikingly similar counterpart exists, yet, true to Jean-Claude Constantin’s signature style, his iteration demands a more engaging interaction for opening the shackle compared to its close relative. A substantial metallic lock, adorned with two keyholes and both impervious to a key entry, presents an initial challenge. Moreover, the large brass faceplate stubbornly resists movement, adding an extra layer of intrigue.

Tortoise Padlock

Tortoise (Turtle) Padlock

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: India
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 7 x 13.5 x 2.5cm

This puzzle lock, while seemingly straightforward, stands out for its intricate decorative design and substantial size. It consistently draws the gaze and ignites conversations amongst interested parties, garnering the most attention, even though the lock is not particularly challenging to open. This padlock is what I term a deterrent lock. Easy to open, but in the case of one picking it, one is slowed to finding the additional step associated with opening the lock.

Trick Lock#1

Creator or Manufacturer: Puzzle Master
Country of Origin: Canada
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 6.2 x 10.2 x 2.9cm

Though deceptively simple compared to other locks on this site, Trick Lock#1 was a must-have for my collection. Its opening solution has been famously employed by magicians throughout history, so resonated strongly with my own ties to magic. Despite having three keys, none unlock the shackle leaving one to question, "how does one open this mysterious lock?"

TrickLock 2015

TrickLock 2015 (Coolen Lock)

Creator or Manufacturer: Louis Coolen
Country of Origin: Netherlands
Rating: 3/5 (Challenging)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 2.8 x 5.5 x 0.8cm

The first in a series of four puzzles released annually from 2015 to 2018 by Louis Coolen, this lock is 3D printed in laser-sintered nylon. Although it appears fragile, this is misleading and conceals numerous secrets. With no key, the padlock offers little guidance to the solver. The solution is particularly satisfying, as it incorporates several innovative methods not found with metal puzzle locks. A treasured piece in my collection.

TrickLock 2016

TrickLock 2016 (Coolen Lock)

Creator or Manufacturer: Louis Coolen
Country of Origin: Netherlands
Rating: 4/5 (Gruelling )

The second puzzle lock crafted by Louis Coolen, TrickLock 2016, follows its predecessor, being 3D printed from laser-sintered nylon, but with a more devious opening mechanism. I must confess, I did need my reading glasses to solve this one but the method used to open this lock is beyond beautiful. The entire process revolves around the supplied key atop the the padlock being used in a number of different ways.

Louis Coolen’s third puzzle lock, TrickLock 2017, once again showcases the unique properties of 3D-printed nylon. TrickLock 2017 is perhaps the most unique and varied of Louis’ creations so far, constantly keeping you guessing and trying new approaches not required or used with the previous versions. It’s another standout addition to the world of puzzle locks.

Believed to have originated in India, the quality and visual appeal are arguably unparalleled in my extensive collection.

Vintage Brass Handcrafted Indian Tricky Padlock

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: India
Rating: 2/5 (Tricky)

Introducing another formidable deterrent lock, the Vintage Brass Padlock is a substantial 1.1kg masterpiece measuring 10x13cm. This authentic antique poses a captivating challenge as it lacks the conventional large brass keyhole, making the initial task an exploration to discover its unique unlocking mechanism. Resembling half a dozen locks with a similar appearance, each has a unique method for solving — this version uses just one key.

Vintage Brass Tricky Handcrafted Padlock

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: India
Rating: 1/5 (Easy)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 7.5 x 10 x 2.5cm

Delving into the realm of intriguing antique locks, one particularly captivated my attention— a venerable brass padlock bearing the weight of seven to eight decades, distinguished merely by the allure of its concealed mechanism. Despite possessing a key, the visible keyhole resists entry. The lock, truly sturdy and weighty, has little on its exterior, mostly sheet brass riveted to the iron body, begging the question, where does one enter the key?

Vintage Iron Handcrafted Indian Puzzle Padlock

Vintage Iron Handcrafted Indian Puzzle Padlock

Creator or Manufacturer: Unknown
Country of Origin: India
Rating: 2/5 (Tricky)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 5.3 x 8.5 x 2.6cm

In a display of Indian locksmith ingenuity, this padlock challenges perceptions while skillfully exploiting padlock conventions by diverting attention from the obvious. A weathered iron padlock, adorned with rivets, houses a keyhole beneath a brass keyhole cover (prevalent on locks from desert regions to safeguard against sand and dirt). The keyhole itself enveloped by a brass surround. The key turns but does not release the shackle. An interesting solution.

Little is known about this lock beyond its original purchase from Peter Hajek, a Professor of Clinical Psychology and avid collector of artisan puzzles. While Hajek is not believed to be the creator of this lock, it was later resold to me and added to my collection. I was informed that similar locks are still used by magicians in certain performances, though as a magician myself, I have yet to encounter anyone who has used one.

The Strong Box

The Strong Box*

Creator or Manufacturer: Joe Porper
Country of Origin: America
Rating: 5/5 (Hardest)
Dimensions (W x H x D): 6 x 4 x 5cm

Although a magic trick and not a puzzle padlock per se, this item is a puzzle with a padlock. A spectator is invited to examine a solid aluminium box with a latch and small padlock. The spectator then attaches the padlock to the box and locks it. Next, they provide a ring or signed coin, which is made to vanish, only to reappear inside the sealed metal box.
